[and unlike before, this revelation does scare her, for a bit. her eyes widen, and she instinctively draws her arms around herself. she hadn't known what to expect, and what he's showing her now was nowhere near what she would have considered. the way his voice comes from seemingly nowhere sends a chill up her spine. but that's it for the momentary fear, leaving an awkward silence behind before she cautiously breaks it.]
Sorry, I... wasn't exactly prepared for that. [she then shakes her head in a bit of embarrassment, raising her hands before her and waving them apologetically.] Sorry, that sounded a little rude—I should just stop talking, shouldn't it?
Is that so? [ His expression sobers with that admission, about having experienced something like this before. He knows it's not his fault, that he has nothing to do with it, but he still felt badly for her, and for all of this. ]
Once is already too much, if you ask me. [ He at least tries to force a smile when she introduces herself, even if it's kind of a sad one, in both expression and delivery. ]
Good to meet you. [ He echoes, his hand slipping away from hers a moment later to fall back to his side. ] You want some company? I'm just out lookin' for a friend of mine, figured he might've run off somewhere 'round here.
[Hmm... That's tough, because his world was technically just a castle, whereas the home he remembers came from borrowed memories.
His brow furrows, and he folds his arms.]
If you want to get technical, I was made in a place called Castle Oblivion. Full of plain, white halls that go on forever, rooms that simulate people's memories, and all the fighting was done with cards.
[she merely continues smiling at him and laughs as a response to his assessment of her situation; there's not much humor in it, but it's warm nonetheless. she folds her hands again when he lets hers go, and tilts her head when he mentions what he's up to.]
I wouldn't mind it if you don't. I could even help you look for him—what's he like? Maybe I've seen him around.
[it'd be more conducive than just standing here and chatting, right?]
[ The pathetic smile he's sporting starts to slip a little bit, even as she continues to laugh, smiling back at him like everything's okay. He doesn't have the heart to question her, or her circumstances. It's none of his business anyway. So, he'll stay out of it, and just worry about the things he can control.
Like finding San. The vampire's eyes crinkle a bit when asked to describe him, and a breathy chuckle follows shortly after. ]
Well, he's not a hard man to miss, I'll tell ya that. He's about this high — [ He gestures with his hand, indicating the space two inches above his own head. ] With creepy dark aura, and a pair of flashlights for eyes.
[ They're pretty bright, so it shouldn't be that hard to find him in the dark of night. ]
[she lets out a soft "hmmm" when he describes the other person he's looking for, trying to wrack her brain for anyone matching it... she'd seen a lot of people in her short time in Rota, especially with the non-natives who have been here longer arriving today. she'd been taking note of each one of them, though not in fear or disgust; she was genuinely curious about a good deal of them, but she knows not to randomly go up to someone and ask what kind of monster they are.]
That's not ringing any bells, but you're right in that he'll probably stick out like a sore thumb! I'll keep an eye out while we walk around.
Thanks. [ He responds, the cheer in his expression slowly fading away. ] That'd help me out.
[ Because the sooner he finds him, the sooner he can get the shade-y popsicle inside somewhere warm, unthaw him a bit. The few times he's seen him around, he was clinging to his side for some warmth, something he can't give with this undead body anymore.
The doctor sticks his hand out and leads the way, walking over the trail of footprints left by others, monster and human alike, that went this direction, trudging over the snow. ]
You haven't met anyone here that you recognized, have you? [ He knows it happens. Sometimes people from the same world get brought here. Sometimes they don't. McCoy is lucky in that respect — because no one he knows has ever shown up here. He hopes they never will. ]
You haven't done anything yet to make me think otherwise. Does that make me naive?
[she's clearly playing around too at this point. she supposes there's a chance of him lying to her, playing her on, but she gets the feeling he's not like that. or if he is, he doesn't lie maliciously; she knows the difference, having been there herself many times before.]
[... she's not sure what she expected, but it's definitely not that.]
That's... quite the unique place! I haven't heard of anything like that before, that's for sure. [part of her kind of wants to ask about the last thing he mentioned just because of how silly it is, but...] What do you mean, "simulate people's memories"?
[and so they begin walking. it's peaceful, she thinks, despite the stories and accounts she's heard in passing. could a place like this really be the terrible hell that people have called it? when he asks her the question, she looks at him thoughtfully.]
I haven't. [drawing upon what she'd just thought moments previously, her expression ambiguous as she turns her gaze to the night sky:] To tell the truth, I don't know whether to be sad or relieved about it.
I don't think so. If it does, it makes a lot of other people naive too. Not just you.
[Naivity could get them all killed, even the already changed ones, but the newcomers have to rely on someone. Just like how him and others had to rely on some of the kindness of the locals here. It wouldn't be right to betray the ones that need to rely on you.]
Exactly what it sounds like. The floors take your memories and create illusions and stuff. You just hold up a card, and it'll be like walking through a real world.
[He didn't experience much of it, just Twilight Town, but it was enough to give a clear impression. That castle was something else.]
[Sadly, his thoughts on the matter differ completely from hers. No. He'd rather be a lone monster trapped here if it meant the safety of others. No one deserves to go through this.
He doesn't respond for a moment, though his tails flick wildly about before he does speak. Sorry, Vanille. He just feels strongly about this.]
Well, it's been an overwhelming couple of days. I'm sure everything's a little like that — all mixed up and confusin'. [ He's careful not to walk to fast, or with too long of a stride, just so his shorter companion can keep up. The doctor turns his head toward her, studying her for a moment before looking away. ]
